The Importance of a Fishing Licence

In order to legally fish and avoid potential charges or fines, it's important that you purchase a fishing licence first. Minors are typically able to fish without one. The minimum age for when a licence is required can vary from region to region. There are specific rules and exceptions depending on your location, so be sure to check local regulations for details.

A fishing licence may be obtained online, by phone, or at your local fishing bait and tackle store. A licence is typically good for the year unless it is a day or seasonal pass. There may be different types of licences available based on the kind of fishing you plan on doing. For example, in Ontario (Canada) there are two different types of fishing licences:

(S) Sport: This is ideal for anglers who fish to put food on the table. It allows you to keep more fish in your possession than the conservation licence allows. It also costs slightly more.

(C) Conservation: Ideal for beginners, sport, and catch-and-release anglers. It costs less than the sport licence, but it restricts the amount of fish you can have in your possession.

I suggest you purchase an entry level or conservation license if a similar option is available in your region. It’s truly all you need to get started with fishing, costs less money, and you can always upgrade to a sport license at any time. You will definitely want to save as much money as you can, whenever and wherever you can.

Before you continue to the next step, make sure you purchase your licence so you don't forget to cross this off your list. If you live in Ontario, head over to this link to purchase your licence online.
